What’s in a perfume (guys read
cologne unless you’re also into perfume)? Oh, just some
harmless fragrance, mixed with irresistible attraction magnets or
pheromones of some other sort. That is if you’re to believe
the ads. Or the perfume will make you more like Liz Taylor.
Don’t tell my wife, but that’s always been my dream.

If you’re to believe everything
you read on the internet, perfumes contain:
Fixatives to make the smell last
longer. These can be made from animal ingredients such as
Ambergris, Castor/Castoreum, Civet, and Musk. Even when fixatives
are not made from animal ingredients I’m not sure why the
manufacturers add them. I mean don’t they want the smell to
last less time, so that you’ll have to apply the perfume more
often, and therefore need to purchase the perfume more often?
Synthetic Chemicals known to be toxic
to the skin, nervous and reproductive systems, and respiratory
tracts. No wonder I have a hard time breathing around
perfume.
Synthetic Chemicals which are known
to be carcinogenic.
Additives, Extenders, and Alcohols.
Perhaps I should be drinking perfume instead.
Carrier Oils and Floral Waters.
This, not to mention Toilet Water.
A multi-faceted kaleidoscope of
ingredients. This from an ad.
Acetone, Benzaldehyde, Benzyl
Acetate, Benzyl Alcohol, Camphor, Ethanol, Ethyl Acetate, Limonene,
Linalool, Methylene Chloride, a-Pinene, g-Terpinene, a-Terpineol.
This from www.herc.org/news/perfume/risks.htm.
And, if you want to find out more
about a specific perfume try the Perfume Encyclopedia at www.javaslublu.com.
But you needn’t worry about all
this. Perfumes and other fragrances are regulated by the FDA, they
should be safe enough to eat; or at least as safe as prescription
drugs on the market.
